My previous post had some public exposure and perhaps tread on someone's toes. It is not directed to anyone in particular. The so-called minimal criterion of who we called expert as one who could read technical papers/documents in the topic concerned with ease, is not meant to be a hard and fast rule. It is certainy not a rule to be used for judging others (how should we know how others can understand technical stuff without proper interaction) but merely an introspective one. Heck, the whole post is written in semi-serious tone, which is obvious from the title of the post (my attempt of word-play with humour). So, please take it with more than a grain of salt.
Such minimal criterion may not even applicable when one gets to areas that cuts across different disciplines where (intense) communications between the disciplines are needed. Too much gatekeeping may just simply obstruct the needed communications to propel such cross-disciplinary area forward. One such area is quantum information technology. Note that this area has already been established for a few decades but we (Malaysians) are 'newcomers' to the scene and our numbers are relatively small in comparison to other areas. The usual named areas involved are of course quantum physics, mathematics, computer science and engineerng. Slightly ignored (at least here) is reframing condensed matter physics as quantum information systems.
In matters of managing the progress of these fields, my (brief) experience in management has been mixed. I tend to focus on creating opportunities while others may focus on control. These are not necessarily in conflict with each other but the latter often degenerates into politics within scientific communities. So I rather have the former than the latter. Let me leave it at that. In any case, as they say, I am no longer in the 'system'.
